Platypterygius is a genus of ichthyosaurs in the Ophthalmosauridae family, which lived in the Lower Cretaceous in what is now Australia, Russia, the United States, South America, and possibly New Zealand. It is the genus most related to Caypullisaurus and Brachypterygius
Of this class of ichthyosaurus, magnificent fossils have been found in Magallanes, Chile.
Findings from the southernmost part of the country have provided abundant articulated remains, currently allowing the identification of the genus Platypterygius, as well as remains of the family Ophthalmosauridae. Findings from Chile include the oldest record of the group in South America. The latter also includes one of the most relevant Lower Cretaceous sites with exceptional preservation of ichthyosaurs, representing an important potential for understanding the group and its distribution during the period
