Gomphotheriidae (Stegomastodon platensis)

Gomphotheriidae (Gomphotheriidae) are an extinct family of proboscids, related to present-day elephants living between the Miocene and Holocene, between 12 million and 10,000 years ago.
-On November 5, 2008, in the vicinity of the city of Valdivia, was found a jaw almost complete of a gonfotérido. The find was made by locals on the banks of the Collilelfu River. The piece, a lower jaw, of great size and weight, according to scientists from the Universidad Austral de Chile correspond to the species Stegomastodon platensis.
-The 2011, Aguas Andinas and Degrémont discovered in the field of the water treatment plant El Trebal, in Padre Hurtado, Metropolitan Region; the most complete skull of gonfoterio found so far in Chile. This skull is the most diagnostic element found so far in the country and thanks to it could identify the genus Stegomastodon.
