The megalodon or megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon), a name that means "big tooth", derived from the Greek terms μέγας (megas, "big", root megal-) and ὀδούς (odoús, "tooth", root odont-), is a Extinct species of shark that lived between 19.8 and 2.6 million years ago, approximately, during the Cenozoic (from the beginning of the Miocene to the end of the Pliocene).
